I want to publish a book that is a compilation of information. What kind of copyright issues are involved?

It is going to be a compilation that gives details of various institutions. The information is public and available on the institutions web sites. If I compile the information to be published for profit, what kind of copyright issues do I need to deal with?I want to publish a book that is a compilation of information. Facts cannot be copyrighted. As long as you're not putting in whole sentences/paragraphs verbatim from your sources, you should be OK.

However, you should cite your sources, as if you're writing a research paper. Include a bibliography, list of web sites, etc.

Also be careful to fact check. Web sites are often not reliably updated or don't always have the best sources themselves. I'm not sure what kind of information you're compiling, whether it's guidebook-type info: The Museum of Weird Art was founded in 1972 and is open from noon to 6:00 pm Thursday-Saturday; or if it's application guidelines for schools, or what. You should probably double-check any of this kind of thing with an official at the institution.I want to publish a book that is a compilation of information. What kind of copyright issues are involved?I work in patents, but you can reach the USPTO helplines through the following ways: email, phone, mail.

Just go to www.uspto.gov and click on copyrights.I want to publish a book that is a compilation of information. What kind of copyright issues are involved?
It sounds like you information is in the public domain. keep track of your sources even if you don't plan a bibliography. Your publishers legal department will let you know if they see anything of question, thats what they are there for.I want to publish a book that is a compilation of information. Just write the book and get a copy of Writer's Market. You will find literary agents in there that may be interested in your project. Don't worry about copyrights. All this is taken care of automatically when your book is accepted by a publisher via a literary agent.

Good Luck!
